Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool

IRS Data Retrieval Process 
  • Log into the FAFSA at  Navigate to the Financial Information section of the FAFSA and follow the instructions for the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.  To have the option to use the tool, you must have already submitted your 2017 IRS Tax Return to the IRS.  You should be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool  six weeks after the IRS has accepted and processed your 2017 IRS Tax Return.
  • If the FAFSA indicates you are not eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or you choose not to  use it, you will be required to submit the 2017 IRS Tax Return Transcript request from the along with copies of your 2017 W-2 forms.  Go to and select Get My Tax Record. You can request the 2017 Tax Return Transcript by selecting "Get Transcript Online" or "Get Transcript by Mail."  Transcript usually arrive in 5 to 10 business days.
