2020 Winter Commencement

RE:                          COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION

 

Congratulations on your graduation from Texas Lutheran University!  This memorandum provides information about the December18 in-person commencement and December 19 live stream events.

 

Please read these instructions carefully as this will be the only detailed communication you receive and there will be no rehearsals for these events.

 

Safety Reminders

In order to gather in person, we ask that you be mindful of the following safety protocols, which will be strictly enforced:

  • Masks will be worn at all times
  • Distancing will be enforced at all times
  • No hugging, handshaking or any other physical contact
  • No gathering in groups before or after the ceremony.

 

IN-PERSON COMMENCEMENT

Date:  Friday, Dec. 18

Time:  5 p.m.

Place: Jackson Auditorium

 

Report to Weston Center Zunker Courtyard/Weston Center School of Music Building by 4 p.m. for picture taking (a professional photographer will take portraits before the ceremony and as you receive your diploma), last-minute instructions, and clarification of the pronunciation of names. At this time, we will also present the diplomas for you to carry in to the auditorium with you, the university honor cords to those graduating with honors, as well as extra copies of the program for you to take to share with family and friends.  The marshals will be present to assist with the line-up, and charts will be posted along the formation area.

 

You are welcome to decorate the top of your graduation cap, as long as the decoration is not deemed offensive. Please keep in mind that the decorations must lie flat on the top of the cap, and may not hang over the edge of the cap. We encourage you to be creative, but please keep it tasteful and decorate according to the rules. We reserve the right to ask you to remove any decorations that are not deemed appropriate.

 

At 4:45 p.m., the procession will move from the School of Music to Jackson Auditorium.  It will be led by the crucifer and the head marshal.  Graduates will process in single file with appropriate distancing, following the marshal to your assigned seat.  You name will be taped to the back of your seat. Once you are in, just follow the program, but remember to keep your mask on at all times.  When we reach the part concerning the presentation of the candidates, listen for Dr. Cottrell to ask the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) to present the candidates.  Dr. Ferguson, VPAA will read a line which ends with "please rise."  Do so as a group.  The president will speak a few more lines and then the VPAA will ask the candidates to present themselves as their names are called.  Watch the marshal. At this point, you will be directed, row by row, to the steps on the right side of the stage. You will carry your diploma with you.  Proceed to the top step and wait for your name to be called.   You will then cross the stage to stand next to Dr. Cottrell for a photo. Keep in mind that you will not shake hands with Dr. Cottrell, but you will hold your diploma as your photo is taken with her. Distancing will be enforced. Transfer the tassel on your cap from the right to the left side, as a traditional sign that you have graduated.  Proceed along the aisle in front of the stage, return to your respective seat, and be seated.

 

After the benediction, the crucifer will retrieve the cross.  The marshal will direct you to fall in line behind the platform party and proceed out of the auditorium and directly outside.  We ask that you not gather follow the ceremony, either in the lobby or outside.

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS, CAPS AND GOWNS

Announcement, caps and gowns are available for purchase at the TLU Bookstore.  (Please note that any honor society or organization cords will be distributed by your faculty/staff sponsor.)

 

VIRTUAL BACCALAUREATE SERVICE

Date:     Saturday, Dec. 19

Time:    1:30 p.m.

 


Baccalaureate is a worship service honoring the graduates. All graduates, families and friends are encouraged to participate. Interim Campus Pastor, Katy Miles-Wallace will lead the service. The recorded service will be live streamed on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1:30 p.m.  The link will be posted on the Commencement page of the TLU Website at www.tlu.edu/graduation

VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT

Date:     Saturday, Dec. 19

Time:    3 p.m.

 

The recorded version of Friday’s In-person commencement will be live streamed on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. as a virtual ceremony. The Livestream will begin with a live welcome from Dr. Cottrell, followed by the recorded ceremony. We hope that you will be able to watch and celebrate with family and friends at the link www.tlu.edu/graduation.  We welcome everyone to join in through the chat session to shout out to friends and offer congratulations to all.
