This course explores the causes, course, and consequences of the American Civil War, from the 1840's through the 1870's. The course will examine the following themes: the crisis of union and disunion; slavery, race, and emancipation; the experience of modern, total war for individuals and American society; the political and social challenges of Reconstruction; and the question of why the Civil War
